LISA MILLER
Lisa Miller is a Hawai‘i-born artist and calligrapher whose work gracefully weaves traditional lettering with contemporary island aesthetics. Her creative journey began at age twelve, when a gifted Osmiroid calligraphy pen from her mother ignited a lifelong passion for the written word. Over the years, Lisa has cultivated a visual language that reflects the rhythm and elegance of Hawai‘i—rooted in heritage, yet fresh in its modern expression.
In 2003, her artistic practice expanded through plein air painting under the mentorship of renowned Hawai‘i artist Mark Brown. This experience deepened her connection to the land and broadened her range to include oils, acrylics, and watercolors. Through continued exploration and dedicated workshops, Lisa developed a signature style that merges fine art techniques with modern calligraphy.
In 2016, she launched Handwritten Aloha, a creative studio showcasing her versatility across oil, acrylic, watercolor, and mixed media—often enriched with her distinctive hand lettering. From bespoke commissions to widely accessible retail collections, Lisa’s work is both personal and purposeful. Her modern calligraphy practice emerged organically through weddings, events, and private commissions, evolving into a meaningful platform to share Hawaiian values and wisdom. Her pieces often incorporate proverbs from Mary Kawena Pukui’s treasured ‘Ōlelo No‘eau, adding layers of cultural depth and resonance.
Passionate about Hawai‘i’s native flora, Lisa uses her art to support awareness and conservation of the islands’ fragile ecosystems. Her Modern Botanical series captures the vibrant essence of Hawai‘i’s natural world through graceful linework and vivid color, featured in her popular notecard collections and prints.
Lisa’s work is a heartfelt tribute to the beauty, stories, and living culture of Hawai‘i—honoring both the land and the people who steward it.
