SASHA ROBERTS
Sasha Lynn Roberts is a contemporary mixed-media artist raised in Brooklyn, New York and now based on Oʻahu’s North Shore. Her work explores the intersection of nature, movement, and the feminine experience—drawing parallels between the vastness of the ocean and the expansiveness of personal identity. Through vivid color and highly saturated depictions of water and flora, Roberts challenges the notion of diminishing oneself, instead embracing scale, presence, and emotional intensity.
Roberts’ practice exists at the convergence of digital innovation and tactile craftsmanship. She begins many works through digital photo compositing, using her own photography as a foundation. Through Procreate and Photoshop, she builds layered, surreal compositions informed by painterly techniques—often incorporating impressionistic, unfinished strokes that retain a sense of movement. Select digital works are produced as archival Giclée prints on watercolor paper, while others serve as studies for hand-painted acrylic works on reclaimed plywood.
A distinctive element of her practice is lenticular art. Roberts hand-carves wooden shutters—often from monkey pod—and paints dual compositions on either side. By physically rotating the shutters, viewers reveal layered narratives, activating the artwork through movement. This tactile engagement mirrors the conceptual layering central to her work: perception shifts, perspective expands, and meaning unfolds over time.
Roberts earned her Bachelor’s degree in Interactive Media Arts from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts and Hunter College, completing her degree at the age of nineteen. Her early recognition began at thirteen, when her charcoal still life was exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art through the annual PSART competition. She later returned to the museum in 2019 for her conté crayon self-portrait.
Her work has since been exhibited nationally and internationally, including installations in Times Square’s Port Authority Terminal Window Display, Rockefeller Center’s Flag Project in partnership with the United Nations Climate Justice Initiative, Miami Art Basel, and Boomer Gallery’s Dark Side Biennial in London. In Hawaiʻi, she has been featured at the Wailoa Center, Downtown Art Center’s Artists of Hawaiʻi Exhibition, UH Mānoa’s Insect Art Show, and American Savings Bank’s Lōʻi Gallery, where a portion of proceeds supported organizations uplifting Hawaiian voices. In 2025, she contributed to the Waipiʻo Highway Mural on Kamehameha Highway in collaboration with HDOT and artist Blythe Yoshikane.
Roberts has also live-painted at Los Angeles and New York Fashion Weeks, and her fashion illustrations have been featured at New York Fashion Week through Art Hearts Fashion. Her work has received international recognition, including distinction at the International Technological Art Awards and the Arts to Hearts Woman Artist Award.
